Friedman on MOOCs

In general I am a Tom Friedman fan and have read nearly all of his books (e.g., The World is Flat; Hot, Flat and Crowded). He is pro education, but also believes the U.S. system is not aggressive enough given developments elsewhere.

Anyway, Friedman has taken note of MOOCs and see this as a revolutionary trend. The MOOC would seem to fit the themes he emphasizes and the role technology and education play in flattening everything.

Tech without access

Advocates for 1:1 and BYOD make, in my opinion, one consistent error. The focus is on the device and not the access. The potential of such programs in improving opportunities for all depends on access. Google’s interest in wireless may influence this discussion if they begin to offer an alternative to cell access.
