NEWS360

One of the first things I now do when a news story breaks that I think has political overtones is to visit NEWS360 to see if they are covering the story. For example, today the Chicago public teachers went on strike. Unions, public employees, education, etc. come together in interesting ways and result in a great opportunity for political spin. News360 uses what the company describes as a semantic analysis system to identify “stories” and then identifies links from various news outlets that are commenting/describing the story. The ways the same situation ends up presented to the public fascinates me. Contrasting the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal is always good for a start.

So, candidate Romney attacks the union and teachers for “turning their backs on students”. Other sources indicate this is the first time since 1987 that Chicago teachers have gone on strike so the tactic is not something that is executed without serious consideration. The “union turns back on student” phrase Romney used comes up from source after source. Is this the “issue” that will redirect the election? What a mess for parents.

I admit that the average salary of a Chicago teacher seemed fairly reasonable to me. However, I live in a different place and deal with different issues on a day to day basis. I have no idea how issues such as class size and cost of living would compare.

Anyone, I think News360 is an interesting site

Shooting the moon

A couple of days ago I attempted to photograph the blue moon.I was not able to generate a great picture of the moon, but I did a produce pretty cool photo. I think now the problem was the auto focus picking up the clouds and throwing the moon out of focus.

So a few days later, I am going through my RSS feed and I come across this “how to photograph the moon” tutorial (in honor of Neil Armstrong). The tutorial even offers the settings – F11, ISO 100, etc. You do need to shoot on manual. A tripod is not necessary.

Biggest Lie on the Internet

I have read and agree to these terms – the biggest lie on the Internet. TOSs (terms of service) are offered and we typically must accept to use an online service, you we do not read and probably would not understand if we did. A site that provides a summary of the TOS from your favorite services – http://tos-dr.info/ may help.

I must give credit to TWIT – this week in tech for mentioning this service.

Google protects YOUR youtube content

What do you make of this? Google is going after services that allow the capture of YouTube content. I am trying to determine what the issue is here. It could be that these services allow the download of content without the permission of content producer. It is also possible that the content producer may intend to distribute the content and would not object. Consider a parallel to images and Flickr. With Flickr the content creator (the photographer) has some control over whether the full size image can be downloaded or not. Why would Google care if the producer of a video did not object to the content being shared. The answer, I suppose, is that Google may prefer the activity within the Google system.

Apple/Samsung decision analysis (not mine)

I have been searching for a summary of reaction to the Apple/Samsung patent decision. Here is a summary of comments provided by analysts (from CNN). I am in the camp of those who believes a) there was patent infringement, b) some of the patents address trivial features (I am still trying to understand which patents were the focus), and c) competition is important so we need more than a single innovator in the smartphone and tablet space (you may feel Samsung was not actually innovating).
