The topic of violent models goes back to the convincing work of Bandura and the bobo doll. Recent work attempts to understand the role of violence in media particularly games in which the game player takes an active role. It seems possible to find a research study backing whatever position you might want to take. The Psychology Department at Iowa State (the program I graduated from many years ago) has become well known for a focus on violence in the media.
