Make gravy

With the typical focus on Siri, it seems to me that Google’s advances in voice recognition have received too little attention. My wife and I sometimes amuse ourselves by submitting the same request to her iPhone and my S4.

Anyway if you have not explored the audio input option for Google give it a try.

Two additional comments:
While I think the technology is cool, I am not willing to be that guy yelling into my computer at the coffee shop.

Search works great for most things, but try as I might I cannot get Google to do a vanity search on my name – Mark Grabe.

Try as I might making certain to emphasize the B – Google insists on searching for mark gravy, make gravy, etc.

Simplification

This is interesting. Wikipedia has obviously grown into a very useful resource. Work on articles, often written by multiple expert, has resulted in impressive and sometimes advanced explanations. The idea of Simple Wikipedia is to reverse this process of increasing complexity and attempt to offer accurate, but simple explanations. The development of articles proceeds in much the same way, but based on different requests of the authors.

Here is a contrast between the traditional wikipedia and simple wikipedia articles on “photosynthesis”.

What is new in classrooms?

Innovating Pedagogy is a brief description of a dozen or so educational innovations (e.g., MOOCs, games in the classroom) from the Open University. Each short piece describes the topic and offers a prediction regarding the potential impact and the time frame of influence. These descriptions are useful for those looking for a basic understanding (perhaps a class assignment). Little research is included to substantiate claims, but I suppose this must be the case when describing new ideas.

Art, Science and Practice

I have encountered several posts lately that give me some concern (HoltThink, Spiked Online). My concern is that the contributions of cognitive psychology and the study of learning, motivation, aptitude, etc. will be ignored in thinking about classroom practice. Perpetrating such a position encourages disinterest in the search for the causes of behavior. The notion that the applied fields of medicine and education work differently can be examined more carefully. There are ways of thinking carefully about why things work in each area. Medicine has the advantage of frequently being in control of what might be described as the independent variable. Take this pill or endure this surgery allows manipulation of a variable in a way that is difficult in the classroom. Medicine and education end up being very similar when the behavior in question involves an element of motivation. Note for example that the control of obesity and weight-related pathologies seems far more complicated and unsuccessful than easily manipulated interventions to prevent what were once deadly diseases (e.g., polio). The avoidance of “scienticism” would seldom be embraced by the physician specializing in the treatment of diabetes, but this physician shares many challenges with a classroom teacher.

I think that controversy and debate are crucial to the advancement of any discipline, but the basis for such engagement should be demonstration and data, not rhetoric. Certainly learning in groups is complicated and the needs of individuals should be considered.

If you must go to system 7 tomorrow

Here is a detailed tutorial on backing up your iPad if you intend to install system 7 tomorrow.

I have several iPads and I plan to wait a bit for the iPad retina and longer for my iPad 2. My greatest concern is that the iPad 2 may not have the power to provide a good experience and I will wait to see how others react.  The delay will be difficult, but I plan to use some form of distraction like going to teach my classes to allow time to pass.

Cross-posting from Google+

This is a test based on this post from Alex Ghosh. The test involves a method for cross-posting from Google+. For those of us with long-standing blogs, it is often frustrating to post to Google+. We may understand the opportunities available in Google+, but be frustrated by the “out of sight out of mind” reality of Google+ and the effort required to manually post to multiple locations. However, the procedure you can access via the link I provide above is relatively easy to implement.

I would suggest that the procedure as explained is a little misleading (I just inserted the script tag to indicate the use of javascript immediately above the href for the post) and does not appear to work until saved to the server. If you are willing to experiment and perhaps annoy your readers with a faulty example until you have had a chance to debug, future efforts will take very little time.

The following content is an example implemented with this procedure.
