Student use of wikis

Educational Researcher, a major AERA research journal, had a recent article summarizing use of wikis in K-12 settings. The authors have already posted a summary so you do not have to be an AERA member to take a look. The one characteristic of the newer report I found to be unique was the attempt to different two categories of student wikis. The general results seem very similar to previous research. The new research suggests that student use of wikis is limited and that most student projects involve single student reports. The sources I have been citing suggest that about 9% of students author a blog or wiki and this new study reports a 20% level of student activity with the more highly valued long term, collaborative, multimedia projects involving only 1% of all wikis. The new study promotes the use of data from large scale data warehouses. The authors had access to data from PBWorks.

Access to large data sources can be great, but I wonder if results would vary as a function of the wiki tool. For example, if my school had access to Google docs for education, I think that I would approach shared “copy editing” and embedding multimedia (two of the activities pointing to the more desired use of wikis) quite differently than if I was using PBWorks. A Google docs document is essentially a wiki and assigning pairs or small teams to multiple wiki documents is relatively easy. PBWorks might make more sense if the goal was a public document created over an extended period of time by a larger team from different schools. My point is that while a large dataset offers some advantages, a dataset focused on one tool also has significant interpretative limitations.

Too helpful

I am on a mission to reduce my Mac’s efforts to be helpful. Why some programmer would assume I wanted to relaunch apps I was using when I shut down or review the documents I was examining when I quit is beyond me. I mostly quit when I am done and have little desire to return to what I assumed was finished.

Anyway, I am attempting to learn how to turn off this “reactivation feature”. Sometimes you just miss opportunities to limit this function. For example, do you know that when you “shut down”, you are given the opportunity to prevent reactivation (see check box in following image). I have viewed this image hundreds of times and never read the fine print.

The Boss

I have great respect for my children’s taste in music. My son in particular has interesting taste and I attribute this partly to his profession. He is a video editor, but sometimes selects music to put behind the video content he generates.

Anyway, he recommended that I listen to a presentation (talking – the type of presentation academics like me are accustomed to considering) given at South by Southwest by Bruce Springstein. Somehow, when anyone under the age of 40 knows “the boss” I am impressed. Somewhere I have a boxed set of casette tapes – I wonder if I still have a casette player. Anyway, I also recommend this presentation (available from NPR even).

Be warned – some adult language is included. Some comments require the “explicit” label.

Twitter expands into Posterous Space

Hi Mark,

I’m thrilled to announce that Posterous has been acquired by Twitter!

The opportunities in front of Twitter are exciting, and we couldn’t be happier to bring our technology and expertise to hundreds of millions of users around the globe.  Plus, the people at Twitter are genuinely nice folks who share our vision for making sharing simpler.

Posterous Spaces will remain up and running without disruption. We’ll give users ample notice if we make any changes to the service. For users who would like to back up their content or move to another service, we’ll share clear instructions for doing so in the coming weeks.

You can find more information answers to other questions you may have here. (When I tried, this link did not work. A bad sign?)

I have had mixed reaction to acquisitions and how they are treated by the new owner – remember LaLa, Picnik, etc.

I kind of liked Posterous as was

ND Teaching Opportunities

We are on Spring break and there seems to be a different reaction when telling folks that we are from North Dakota. It used to be that there was some comment on the weather. Now people comment on oil. I can’t really say that I can point to personal examples of the benefits – we live in the opposite side of the state. However, I did come across this and thought some educators may find it of interest

Sal Kahn on 60 minutes

60 minutes does a nice presentation on Sal Kahn and Kahn Academy. A nice telling (perhaps retelling if you saw the TED talk).

While criticized you must admire his persistence and commitment. Apply as needed.
